I am a school librarian and reading teacher with experience in Grades K-8. In 1989 I began sharing baseball stories with young people. I noticed that even my most reluctant students would pay close attention when any baseball discussion arose. It was "The Natural" motivator. Today, I continue my interest in motivating children to read through my teaching and presentations.

As a school librarian, I listened to my students several years ago when they continuously requested a book about the Orioles' superstar Cal Ripkin, Jr. Their requests led to my writing Cal Ripken, Jr.: Quiet Hero and, since its publication in 1993, I've written ten other juvenile biographies. I am extremely interested in children's reading interests and take great pleasure in writing books whose subjects kids want to read about such as baseball heroes.

I find that students are highly motivated to read nonfiction, yet it is often downplayed on school reading lists as well as in local and national honors such as the Newbery Medal. I not only enjoy writing nonfiction, I enjoy demonstrating interviewing, researching and writing methods with students and teachers. Additionally, I love sharing with librarians, teachers, and parents outstanding baseball titles that inform young readers about our country's history and the important role that the national pastime has played in movements such as desegregation.

My interest in baseball is not only an outgrowth of students' reading habits; it started at my birth in the tiny rural village of Sudlersville on Maryland's Eastern Shore, the hometown of the Baseball Hall-of-Famer Jimmie Foxx. Nicknamed "Double X," the farmboy from Sudlersville became one of baseball's greatest sluggers. The stories I heard about him nurtured my love for the game. I now live in Baltimore where I can frequently be found at Camden Yards during the baseball season.
