“I didn't like my history classes when I was in school. They were all about memorizing dates and what I considered boring details. Later, though, I realized that history is all about people--idealistic, ambitious, sometimes vain, sometime bright, sometimes ordinary, sometimes successful, sometimes failures. People like us.”
                             Betsy Harvey Kraft

The Smithsonian Associates is offering an all day seminar on Writing Nonfiction for Young Readers led by Guild member Betsy Harvey Kraft on Saturday, Feb 27.  The workshop will include an overview of current trends in nonfiction for young readers and discussions of the variety of writing styles used by successful authors. Participants will learn how to identify and research topics that will appeal to kids, parents, teachers and librarians.  The one-day session will also include writing exercises and exploration of ways to match manuscripts with appropriate publishers.

Kraft is the author of such award-winning nonfiction as

• Theodore Roosevelt: Champion of the American Spirit (ALA Notable, National Council of Social Studies Notable Books, New York Public Library 100 Titles for Reading and Sharing)

• Sensational Trials of the Twentieth Century (VOYA’s Nonfiction Honor List)

• Mother Jones: One Woman’s Fight for Labor  (Christopher Award)
