I have always been an artist. I have always loved to create things; paintings, stories, illustrations of imaginary worlds. When I was a child, my mother and I would go to the library every week. Being without a book to read was unimaginable, both then and now. I studied painting and printmaking in college and graduate school and my art had stories to tell. Illustration seemed a natural extension of my painting. I began illustrating children's books in 1992. My artwork was tropical in nature so the books that came my way were folktales from Africa, Latin America and Hawaii. After 5 books I decided to write. Dog Magic and Annabelle's Big Move both reflect my personal experience. Dog Magic is a true story about overcoming fear of dogs by means of a pair of magical shoes. I wrote Annabelle's Big Move after moving across country with my dog, Annabelle. In this story Annabelle must adjust to a place that is different from her home and find new friends. In M is for Maryland, Washington ABC's (author/illustrator), Sun and Honeybees(illustrator), I began to write nonfiction with a touch of whimsey. This continues in The Story of Hula, which blends Hawaiian culture and history with modern times and is my first venture into verse. My newest book, A Story of Surfing, combines history, Hawaiian and surf culture, time travel and fiction. It is also written in playful verse. My books are colorful worlds that come from the heart.
