Build puppets with Abraham Matias and Learn about his journey

Meet with Abraham Matias, builder of many haunting puppets and winner of the 2026 Pura Belpre´ Award for the illustration of Popo the Xolo. Abraham's illustration of Popo (the dog) and Grandmother move the story out of the here and now and into the mythical realm of the journey that begins after death. Abraham will tell us about his own illustration journey and help us prepare for our own artistic process with a short, fun project that can be done at home.  

To work along with Abraham during the presentation, you should have the following supplies:

• Paper: Card stock of at least 80lb is recommended. 

• Paper Scrap (optional): If a participant wishes to use extra texture I recommend this pack from Blick

• Preferred mediums include colored pencils and markers. Water-based materials such as watercolor or acrylics will work but participants should consider the drying time. 

• Scissors or X-Acto knives, if comfortable.
