About the event

What's it like to be a judge for the famed Caldecott awards honoring the best American picture books? Guild members got a glimpse at a Mock Caldecott Zoom session January 15 led by librarian Jennifer Clemons.

The actual Caldecott Medal was presented 11 days later by the American Library Association, and the winner was Fireworks, illustrated by Catia Chien and written by Matthew Burgess.

Clemons, the curator of the Butler Children's Literature Center at Dominican University in Illinois, has run many mock Caldecott sessions, and she presented five picture books to Guild members for consideration.

One of them was Fireworks. The others were Every Monday Mabel (by Jashar Awan), A Gift of Dust (illustrations by Guild member Juana Martinez-Neal and text by Martha Brockenbrough), The History of We (by Nikkolas
