Moira Rose Donohue

I wrote my first book when I was in sixth grade.  It was about a girl who was auditioning for a part in a ballet recital.  It resulted in my first rejection.  I took the kind, handwritten rejection hard and changed direction--I decided to become a lawyer.  But after 20 years as a legislative lawyer in the banking area, I resolved to try writing fiction again.

I grew up with a father who read the dictionary every night.  From him, I inherited a love of words, grammar and punctuation.  I get excited about things like dependent clauses and indirect objects.  I know--I am a grammar geek.  When I was a lawyer, I became involved in a case about a missing quotation mark in a very old banking law that ultimately went to the U. S. Supreme Court!  So it’s only fitting that my first successful attempt at writing for children should involve punctuation.  Albert Whitman & Co., Inc. published ALFIE THE APPOSTROPHE, the story of an apostrophe who performs magic tricks in the school talent show.  I followed that with PENNY AND THE PUNCTUATION BEE, also from Albert Whitman.

But after the punctuation books, I began writing nonfiction.  And I found I loved it.  I have learned so much!  And I enjoy the challenge of trying to make a true story come alive to a reader.  I have over 20 books published (see below), along with plays for children, magazine stories and poems.  My most recent publication is THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT THROUGH THE EYES OF LYNDON B. JOHNSON with My Core Library (an ABDO imprint), released in February, 2016. The book received a starred review from Booklist.

In addition to grammar and punctuation, I love tap dancing, old movies, hockey and dogs.  And I love to do school visits.  My school programs are curriculum-based and described on my website.
