Mama's Chicken & Dumplings

By:

Dionna Mann

Mama's Chicken and Dumplings is about 10-year-old Allie who with a jar of chicken and dumplings in one hand and a Man-for-Mama Plan in the other sets out on a West Main Street adventure in 1935 Vinegar Hill, a thriving African-American neighborhood of Charlottesville, Virginia, determined to take her life from broken to perfect. All Mama has to do is stop having eyes for Mr. Coles, the uncle of her NOT-freind Gwen, and marry the right fix-it man–one who kind smiles, sings well, and most importantly loves her mama's cooking.

Though the storyline is lighthearted and fun, it includes themes about controlling one’s inside-heat, overcoming jealousy, and learning the importance of focusing on the good in our lives and the good in others.
